Rave Reviews

So after nervously sending out surveys to my clients from last year, I learned that some of them actually like the work that we did! Ha!
And because the combination of spring fever and slow business and the fact that I am a shameless self promoter, I decided to put a few of them up here on the site. (but only the good ones)
Diane Lott, of Marietta says:
"Excellent Job Always - would recommend to everyone. Always shows up on time, stays in touch, and completes on jobs with complete professionalism! You can count on him to do a professional job and stay on budget. Just hope he never moves away."
- Actual verbatim letter

Brenda Moreshead of Alpharetta says:
"Our job designed and completed by TrimWorks was professional from the point of contact. Darwin is very skilled and professional. Out project is unique and continuously recieves excellent reviews from friends and relatives. I love the custom work. My only reservation about referring him to the neighbors is having them duplicate our bathroom."
- Actual Verbatim Letter

So you see folks, I actually do good work, and have plenty of people out there who will vouch for me as well. I am also very slow right now, as I am waiting on HOA approval for a job at the Sugarloaf Country club, and would love to get a project in between now and then.

I also noticed that my contact info is not very available - I am working on that, but give me a minute or two - I am a carpenter, not a web guru.
So get in touch, and lets get that something awesome into your house!!

Vertical TV Breakroom

After a few jobs in the house of R. & D. Lott, they finally let me install the break room in their new office. R&D are part owners in vertical TV, TV for business and needed a place to brew coffee, listen to Jimmy Buffet, and store leftover pizza and beer from the guys. (I'm not kidding), so they hired me to do this simple kitchen. Nothing fancy, but a good start.

Other Projects: I am hereby announcing the launch of Atlanta Garden Structures, my newest and hopefully sucessful venture. We will be (and are already) building things like custom Pergolas, Decks, window boxes, arbors, trellis (s), and decorative gates.

With a little luck, some good salesmanship, and a bit of finagling (my specialty) we will have some custom window boxes for sale at Boxwoods of Buckhead, and maybe even a pergola or two.
Anyway, look for a website link in a day or two, and let me know what you think!

Mirrors and such

So,
lately we have been busy with a laundry list of other projects that need to be done at the house of the huge (read: heavy as hell) Iron Doors.
A couple more photos of some mirror installs, and hopefully one day, we can actually have a photo of the finished door, providing it ever gets out of the shop. ha.

Iron Door

Many thanks to Keith for this newest project. Over the past couple of days, we have installed the door you see here. It is about 15 feet high, and made of wrought iron and glass. The thing was heavy enough that we had to get it in place with a mini trackhoe, which was what we will call a "high-pucker factor" installation. However, as you can see it was a sucess, and the door, glass and inner doors went in quite well.
Keith in in the process of renovating his home, and in my humble opinion, this makes a great addition; if you want one in your house, it can be obtained and installed by us. Just shoot me an email and we will get the ball rolling.

Spring, 2007

Hello Atlanta!
Having been here since august, and learning some very important lessons, like: stay away from 400 on fridays, I must say I like the area, and business has been improving greatly.

After a small sabbatical into the commercial arena, I am back in the residential game.

Announcing: we are beginning to offer a new product line in the form of custom-made cypress pergolas! I as a lumber broker get great prices on the lumber itself, and the demo model turned out great! (Please see picture). It is actually up for sale right now, and will be about $4000 installed. If you are interested, please send me an email at trimwork@gmail.com and we can get something together. I can also just sell you the lumber. Just email for that one.

Licensure Issue: I have recently learned that GA has instituted a licensure program for residential contractors. Because I have a license from back home, I am currently in negotiations with Georgia to grant me a reciprocity license, which will let me avoid another boring class and a bunch of unnecesary fees. If anyone has concerns, please don't hesitate to voice them.

Other Projects: I am looking for some more fun decks to build. I recently found a great source for Ipe, or brazilian walnut, which, in my humble opinion, makes some of the most beautiful decking. I can get some wholesale pricing, but please understand that it is a high-end item and commands high prices. I will have those up shortly. I have also recently moved into a shop in Peachtree Hills, (small, humble, but hey - I love it), and have done my first run of some display stands. They went really well, and if anyone (small business owners - hello!) needs some limited custom shop work done for a fair price, please let me know - I love having shop work, as it cuts down my commute. (but I will deliver a finished product).

Anyway, thats it for now - I have to go build some things to pay the internet bill, so dream up a project and get in touch! spring is coming, and I want to be outside, not on the computer typing! I also want to take another trip. The picture here is a butcher shop in Italy - they make a great sausage and cheese plate. I went with my dad, and had a great time. Let me build your deck, and I'll bring you a few recipies!

Settling in....

Wow, two months in atlanta seems like a day!
Anyway, business here has been a bit slow, probably due to lack of advertising. I thought I would post up here again for all the craigslist traffic I am trying to send here.
The Latest project was a cypress bathroom redo, with select 1x6 paneling on the walls and ceiling, and a hand-made door casing. It turned out great, and the client loved it, but my camera never made the trip.
Tomorrow I start on a deck redo - the client didn't take my bid, and the other guys (I have no idea who they were) made a royal mess out of it. I will be sure and get before and after pictures of that project.
Anyway, anyone here from craigslist should feel free to look around, and can also email me directly for a price quote or reference request.
Hope to hear from you soon!

Atlanta Bound!

<- Me and dad, somewhere in Vermont, on a cycling trip through the Green mountains!

Sadly, I have decided to leave the lovely gulf coast, and am heading back to traffic, high cost of living, but oh-so-enjoyable HotLanta. I take the LSAT (yikes!) on the 30th of September, and will start law school the following fall.

The projects on the coast are wrapping up (elevator is almost done!!) and I am selling off real estate as fast as i can.

Many thanks to Waldo, Metro-Z and Keith for hosting me for the time being, and anyone with a home for sale - email me please!
Several projects for the week include a fence, a stone patio, and getting the last piece of land up for lease. Can't wait!

Oh, and if you are visiting this site from craigslist.org, please have a look around and feel free to call me with any questions or concerns, just not this weekend - i have gone to ride my bike in north MS, where mercifully, my phone does not get service. My cell phone is 228.366.0240, and NO, you cannot leave me a message. I hate voicemail, but I do return calls. Also, you can use the link in the sidebar to send me an email.

Also, many thanks for Margie Benton's comment - I had no idea my contact info wasn't available. Too much sawdust. Anyway, THANKS!, and email me back about your condo!

Hello,
Sorry it's been almost a month since a post, but we have been working, not blogging.
Since the last post, we have done another trimout of a house (nothing exciting), built the TV cabinet you see below, and have poured concrete and framed out the elevator shaft for my first residential elevator. Cabinet was built around the television (52") and turned out fairly well.
<-upper doors

<- Lower Door Detail

<-frame for elevator shaft, bottom floor.

<- Forms & rebar for slab.

We should get the elevator finished up here soon, provided the ^&*) electrician ever shows up.
After that, I have been hired by Camp Coast Care as a General Contractor & consultant to build a large steee building complex that will serve as a habitat for humanity type camp. Office over there (Long Beach, MS) is in a storage container, and the accomodations aren't much better, but the cause is a good one.
Until next time.....

more trimworks news: The &(%# stairs are finally done! (except for a bit of tile). I think they turned out great. see for yourself, and let us know what you think! trimwork@gmail.com

Since then, we have built a huge (8' tall x 5' wide) TV cabinet(pictures to come), and currently installing an elevator(photos would be here, but camera cord is at the office), and will be doing a full trim job for a house in Pascagoula. Crown, base, window casings, etc. That will start on the 22nd of this month.

Otherwise, keep thinking of projects, and let us know when you want them built. I really want a new miter saw and stand, so I better quit typing and go drum up some more business.

<- Jeff, completely whacked on BriWax Fumes. He should wake up by wednesday or so..... Hopefully you like what you have seen thus far, and are bursting with ideas which you would love to see implemented in your place of residence. To further inspire you, here are a few more pictures of things recently accomplished. A built-in Kitchen-Aid Fridge with antiqu cypress wine rack and open storage. Top cabinet is under construction, and will be mounted and finished later today. Photo on right is a detail of the top cabinet.

A few more pictures of work recently (sort-of) completed.

<- A custom Door casing from select pine stock with casing, backband, and rosette blocks.
Somwhere on here (I can't get the formatting to line up right) is a picture of some nice 7" Crown molding. Its the one with the light blue walls.

Ok,
the cypress cabinet evolves a little more.
I have fallen in love with Kreg's Rocket Pocket as a way to make doors. Aspiring lazy woodworkers should get one. Door joints are now doable, even for an idiot like me.

Rainey, our part-time shop dog. Covered in Planer shavings. Supervisory wages include bones, pig ears, and occasional Wendy's fries

<- Raw antique Cypress becomes finished cabinet face frame and doors.

So, we hope you like our style, and hope you will be in touch as well, mostly tyo prevent our return to homlessness and vagrancy, and keep Jeff's love for paint fumes fed.

TrimWorks: (n)/ : Really Good Carpentry

Hi, and welcome to TrimWorks. First, thanks for visting, and hopefully you will get some sort of good from your visit. Being from the south, we must first make introductions.

The Crew:
<- This is Jeff(a.k.a. The Scientist). He goes by Fluffy. He takes care of painting, prep, and making sure I never get to relax. Ever. He has no brain-mouth filter, and is our main source of entertainment. Here he is on a roof, showing off the goods. As it happens, the person above him actually getting some work done is me. Classic. Fluff also serves as T-shirt maker, part-time romeo, coffee-fetcher extraordinaire, dog-trainer, and one day, will be a decent nailer of sticks. He has aspirations of piratehood, inclinations of dolphin-ness, and is also a master scuba-diver.
<- Another pirate-to-be, Corey (The O.G. of pirates) is Jeff's partner in piratehood, loves to boat-shop, and is prone to sunburns after too much grog. Corey is our master of the "rig" and has been known to spend hours to properly cover cubbyholes. He has been known to build modern furniture on his lunch breaks. He has no fear of heights, lives on mexican salads, and is most famous for the coining of the term "C-Worker" - the dubious title we all hold, along with our college diplomas.

<- This is Taylor, also known as "The Dink". In the background is D Vann - laziest man alive, and our future legal counsel, provided he gets out of law school. Dink drives a nuclear-powered Tacoma, loves "Tha Griz" and freaks out randomly. He also is the second-most whipped guy in Mississippi. The judges are still out on number 1. Dink loves to run sanders, caulk, spackle, and talk about how badass his truck is. Oh, and talk on the phone to his girlfriend. He enjoys big burritos, diet coke, long haired dachshunds, and cleaning jobsites. He holds the title of "The Monica Sellis of construction". Don't ask. And the chief moron - me. I try to keep this herd of cro-magnons in line, show them what NOT to do (Read: nail-gun on thumb= bad) and try to keep us out of jail and bankruptcy. I started building things at around age 2 with my grandad, and just kept on going.

Ok, now that you know everyone, we would like to take a bit more of your time to show off what we can do. Our sign (on the sides of the tool trailer) reads: Trim, Cabinets, General Contracting, Decks, Gazebos, Additions, Porches, (you get the idea).
I am (believe it or not) a licensed residential builder in Mississippi, and in theory, am able to build a whole house from scratch. However, because i am also a stubborn person, we pretty much stick to carpentry. As of now, we have done:

<- This Deck

1 Foundation (sorry no photos - its under a house anyway)
Trim (7 doors, baseboards, casings and windows)
Siding (Hardi-Plank) - see photo of Fluffy
A set of custom Stairs (Photos to come)

Custom Newel posts and balusters for stairs

<-A custom TV Cabinet. built around a 42" Dell Plasma. Too bad we didn't get visitation rights in the contract. Birch plywood with Poplar stock for door and face frames

We have bids out for:
an Elevator (residential)
Custom birch cabinets in a house
Brazilian Cherry vanity
Custom trim-out of antique house
15'x20' Gazebo with Timber-frame and cypress doors

We do all of our own designs, with a few stolen from magazines/books, etc, but neverthless shamelessly claimed. All the work is done in-house, and we proudly stand behind it - or go running for the hills, depending on the outcome.
Well, for the time being, that's all, but check back often for more photos, work examples, and C-workin' good times.
